The New School Library
Re-imagining the Role of School Libraries in Encouraging
Middle-School Children to Read More
Preface
Reading has been proven to have extremely positive effects on childhood development. Yet studies have shown that reading for pleasure has declined sharply in recent years for children. Interestingly enough, the digital revolution has dramatically increased platforms to read on. But therein might lie the problem. Children are choosing to chat with friends online, watch movies and television, and game instead of reading for pleasure. But what if we could make reading fun again? How might you get kids to read more?
- IDEO U Insights for Innovation
This brief was the starting point of the project.
Indian School Al-Ghubra, a co-educational school, serving the Indian expatriate population in Muscat, Oman collaborated with me on this project to gain knowledge about how their middle-school children can be encouraged to read more.
While the project begins on a rather broad note. However, based on initial research analysis, it soon focuses on how the school’s library system and culture can be re-envisioned to address the brief.
The New School Library was undertaken over six weeks as part of an IDEO U’s course titled Insights for Innovation. It explores various qualitative research methods to uncover deep and meaningful insights that inspire action.
